There are steady shifts in the attitudes of most demographic groups towards te reo and culture.

SINCE 2016, MĀORI BROADCASTING funding agency Te Māngai Pāho has used an indigenous framework acronymised as KoPA to track attitudes and behaviours towards the language. The model places people on a continuum with seven categories:

Kore: No interest in te reo Māori (two subgroups)

Pō: Curious or supportive but not yet active (three subgroups)

Awatea: Active users and promoters (two subgroups)
