Numerous rockers have been immortalised with statues. Joe Geesin surveys some star-studded memorials

A Gary Moore statue is planned for the Cathedral Quarter in his home city of Belfast, and work on a clay model began in April. On 9 May, Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister's form was unveiled in his stomping ground of Stoke (Burslem Market Place, ST6 4AR), while an Otis Redding statue was unveiled in his hometown of Macon, Georgia, US, and a Tina Turner statue is due in her hometown, Brownsville, Tennessee. In the light of this, RC decided to look at some statues around the world that already celebrate pop and rock musicians.

Lemmy's statue, a 2.25m bronze sculpture is designed by renowned local sculptor, Andy Edwards, best-known for his statues of football managers Brian Clough and Peter Taylor. Police reportedly demanded a higher plinth than was first planned, to deter fan 'antics' about it. Also on the football front, Fulham FC's Michael Jackson statue was removed in the light of issues following disturbing allegations made against him (and not to mention the club's owner - so we won't). However, there are many more statues that aesthetes can still seek out.

Marc Bolan bust/plinth, Queen's Ride, Barnes Common, Barnes, London SW13 OHT. Adjacent to Barnes Station, it's close to the spot where he died in a car crash. It was erected in 2002 to mark the 25th anniversary of his passing.

Sonny Bono statue, 155, South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, 92262, California, US, where he served as mayor.

Chuck Berry statue, 6501, Delmar In The Loop, St Louis, Missouri, 63130 US, his birthplace.

The Beatles statue, Pier Head, Liverpool (near Brunswick Street/Canada Boulevard), was unveiled on home turf in December 2015.

Cilla Black statue, Mathew Street, Liverpool L2 6RE, unveiled to commemorate the local gal with a lorra lorra hits in 2017.

EASTERN PROMISE

A string of subtly sublime pop confections ensured Liverpool duo China Crisis were regular fixtures in the mid-80s charts, yet critical acclaim was thin on the ground. Jack Watkins feels history has unfairly neglected them, and he meets the still-gigging Scousers' Gary Daly to set the record straight

"THEY'RE ALMOST SCIENCE FICTION CHARACTERS"

In 2016, two of the most significant figures in modern pop left us within the space of a few weeks. And while David Bowie and Prince are associated with different eras, they both retain a mystique which, long after their passing, only makes our fascination for them grow. Rob Hughes assesses their twin legacies, explores their posthumous contributions to their catalogues, and compares and contrasts their particular varieties of genius, with input from collaborators and colleagues.
