Summer 2025

Driving in Salford recently I saw that PMT (Play Music Today) was closed, I later discovered that they had gone into administration.

STAR LETTER

CLOSING DOWN

I bought all five of my guitars from them, plus my amp, straps, capos, tuners, strings and other bits and bobs. I also had my guitars maintained at the tech shop next to their store. These larger stores may not be to everyone's taste, but they provide a service to many. I spent hours picking my instruments, and the staff were patient and knowledgeable. Sadly, this is a sign of the times; too many use high street shops to try out guitars and other instruments, then after having their fill, they go and buy online just to save a few quid. Now what will happen when the last music shop closes?

I love reading reviews, especially non-biassed ones like those Guitarist does, but they are only a person's opinion. Who in their right mind would buy a guitar without playing it? Written reviews only give an indication and what to expect, watching a YouTube video is not much better. You don't get the feel or usability and most certainly not anywhere near an accurate representation of the sound; you just get the views of the person at the other end. You wouldn't go out and buy a car purely on a magazine review or the word of a salesperson, you would drive it. With PMT's demise another valuable resource has gone. Unless people support their music shops, large or small, others will follow and where will you go then?

This isn't a guitar I would normally choose for an article, but I think it demonstrates just how extreme Gibson's custom division was prepared to get in order to make a customer happy back in the day.
