The 2026 edition of Watches and Wonders Geneva arrived at a curious crossroads for the luxury industry.

To read the official post-show reports is to be swept up in a tide of superlative data: nearly 60,000 unique visitors, a nine percent jump in attendance, and a record-breaking 66 exhibiting brands. On paper, the Palexpo has never looked more like the undisputed capital of the watchmaking ecosystem. Yet, for those of us walking the carpeted halls, the atmosphere was less about the raucous celebration of growth and more about a disciplined, almost defiant intentionality.

If last year's headlines during the fair days were dominated by the sudden shock of new US tariffs, this year the mood is notably more sombre. The long shadow of the conflict in the Middle East has done more than dominate the news cycle; it has quietened a previously vibrant Gulf market, which recently commanded a formidable share of global exports.
