THE TOURIST helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River on April 10, killing the pilot and five passengers, appears to have fallen victim to a hazard known as “mast bumping.” It’s a phenomenon unique to helicopters with semi-rigid rotors like this one, a Bell 206L-4 LongRanger, and it’s particular to their structure.
