Navigating messy family dynamics over Christmas ... it’s a situation familiar to many, and the premise of numerous festive films – a list that now includes Kate Winslet’s directorial debut, Goodbye June!

In the film, adult siblings are unexpectedly brought together for the holidays when their mother suffers a sudden decline in health. It’s not autobiographical, but the concept was inspired by Kate's own family.

Kate’s son Joe Anders, who she shares with director ex-husband Sam Mendes, was inspired to write the script following the death of his maternal grandmother, Sally Bridges-Winslet.

Initially, Kate was just going to act in and produce the film. But then she realised she couldn't let anyone else tell her son’s story and asked Joe if she could step behind the camera too.
