They are the number one tool for any gardener. Keep them in your pocket as you walk around the garden and you can prune, dead head, shape and remove any disease or damaged wood from plants. When looking for secateurs, choose ones with a bypass action as these give a clean cut. Make sure you keep them clean to prevent disease or fungal issues spreading around the garden. To make your secateurs last a lifetime they should only be used on branches a maximum thickness of your finger - anything larger and you'll need some loppers or a saw.
