SHARING A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH KIDS IS NEVER EASY

With nearly one in two Australian men and women diagnosed with cancer by age 85, many face the difficult task of sharing the news with loved ones. For parents, the biggest worry is often how to tell their children. Approaching the conversation with honesty, calmness and age-appropriate language can help kids feel supported and reassured during this challenging time.

HOW SHOULD I BREAK THE NEWS?

Children need considered and factual information, so they don't fill in the gaps or blame themselves. Tell them what cancer is in simple terms, why you're unwell and what will happen next. Let them know it's OK to ask questions.
