AS ROCK BAND CULTURE WARS SURFS THE EXHILARATING WAVE SURROUNDING ITS DEBUT ALBUM DON'T SPEAK, FRONTMAN ALEX DUGAN REFLECTS ON THE RIDE.

Balance And Composure

I MAY BE ADMITTING a bias of mine, but I know that I'm not alone: there are fewer cultural phenomena as rousing as watching a fledgling rock band make it. Even if I checked my empathy for the underdog at the door, being a spectator to the triumph of the vocals-guitarbass-drums mode still feels capable of summoning a uniquely incandescent kind of hope.

That feeling permeates my conversation with Culture Wars frontman Alex Dugan, whose Texan outfit is currently dominating the cultural zeitgeist. By the time we speak, the band has already announced the third leg of a world tour before the first has even begun, a dizzying momentum powered by years of groundwork, emotionally charged live performances, and the swelling success, following the April 10 release of its debut album, Don't Speak. Touring with Maroon 5 and LANY has further sharpened its understanding of expressive scale and power, illuminating what makes the quintet compelling beyond mere ambition. Beneath the towering hooks, explosive dynamics, and genre-spanning reach lies an awareness of harmony that courses through both their lives and art.
