COMMON FRIDGE/FREEZER FAULTS

Your fridge freezer is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home, so when it stops performing as it should, it can cause major inconvenience. The good news? Not every fault means an expensive call-out or a trip to the shops for a new one. In many cases, you can fix the issue yourself with a little know-how and a few basic tools.

Here's a guide to the most common fridge freezer problems, how to troubleshoot them, and when it's time to call in the pros.

1. Fridge light not working

This is often a simple DIY fix:

• Replace the bulb

Many models use small screw-in bulbs that are easy to swap. Just make sure the fridge is unplugged before you begin.

• LED strip lighting

If your fridge has internal LED lights, replacing them can be more complex. Unless you're confident with electrical repairs, it's best to get a professional to handle it.

2. Damaged door seals

If your food spoils quickly or you feel cold air escaping:

• Visual check: Look for tears, warping, or areas where the seal has hardened.

• Test with a banknote: Close the door on a R10 note. If you can pull it out easily, the seal isn't doing its job.

• Some seals pull out easily, while others may require loosening screws.
  

3. Fridge too warm

If your fridge isn't staying cool, but it's set up correctly (level, with enough ventilation and away from heat sources), check the following:

• Thermostat setting: Has the dial been nudged accidentally? Make sure it's set to a cool enough temperature.
