QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE GETTING A DOG

BRINGING A PUP into your family is a big responsibility in terms of time-vet visits, training sessions, walks, grooming, and an eating schedule-not to mention the financial investment and emotional commitment. Are you ready? Ask yourself the following questions to get an idea.

What Kind of Dog Will Fit My Lifestyle?

Are you looking for a hiking companion? A dog who can travel with you? Or do you prefer a mellow pup who sleeps all day to keep you company? These are all important questions to ask before adopting, says Lindsay Hamrick, director of shelter outreach and engagement at the Humane Society of the United States. When you're clear about your lifestyle and energy level, shelter staff can better match you with your ideal companion (and steer you away from a dog who might not be the best fit).

If you work away from home eight hours a day, you'll need to make arrangements for your pup-either a dog walker, doggy daycare, or you taking trips home on your lunch break. If you don't have the time or resources, adopting a dog probably isn't best right now.

Do I Have Time to Train My New Pet?

Being a parent to a rescue dog, whether a puppy or an adult, will involve socializing and training. Both these practices help dogs become good canine citizens who respond to people, other animals, and new situations in a positive manner.
