NOUVEAU BENCH

The Fireside Bench from Stickley celebrates the company's 125th anniversary. Based on a Stickley Brothers design from 1902, the high-backed settle is reminiscent of inglenook seating placed in pairs on either side of a fireplace. This versatile version lends itself to entryways, mudrooms, and living areas. Noteworthy elements include a slightly pitched, triptych back and stunning inlays that recall the designs of architect and furniture designer Harvey Ellis, who worked for Stickley briefly in 1903. stickley.com

imageVictorian Spiral

Considering an extra staircase for your home? Evoke the opulence of the Victorian era with a spiral staircase from The Iron Shop. A near replica of fashionable models of the late 1800s, the custom-made Statement kit offers such details as ornamental scrolling and cutwork embellishments on treads, spindles, and handrail. In steel or aluminum, the stair is much lighter than cast iron. Riser heights are proportioned to the overall height. Stair treads are available in a dozen patterns and can be clad in luxurious woods from American cherry to mahogany and white oak. Choose from various paint options, including a hand-applied verdigris finish. Kits arrive with all parts needed to build the stair in a weekend, including a step-by-step instruction manual. theironshop.com

designing built-in living spaces

I want an alcove just for me. Kind of like a hideout separate from the commotion in the rest of the house from which to read, write, nap, or just daydream. I want to be aware of the action in the house but be able to turn my shoulder politely and be by myself. So goes the design brief from one of our clients. She's not alone in her desire for personal scale and place-making in home design; this is a common human need.
