The family bathroom, often awash with clutter – from lotions and potions to rubber ducks – needs to work hard, especially in the pre-school rush. It also needs to be a retreat once the kids are in bed. How do you strike a balance? We asked three people in the know to share their insider tips…

‘Typically, bathrooms are compact, so you need to plan carefully,’ says Ruth. ‘Think about the size and layout of your current bathroom and how it serves – or doesn’t – each member of your family.’

‘While a complete refit will provide the best overall result in terms of aesthetics and function,’ says Clare, ‘partial refits aren’t always cheaper as it can take more time and effort to combine existing with new.’
