Cordless strimmers

BEFORE YOU BUY

A lawnmower can make light work of the majority of your overgrown lawn, but a strimmer is handy for dealing with the awkward-to-reach areas. With this in mind, the ergonomics of the machine are important. Adjustable handles and angles can be helpful when strimming in tight spaces and can keep you in the correct posture while you work.

You need to consider the size of your outdoor space when purchasing a strimmer. The cutting width of a strimmer refers to the diameter of the cutting head - and the bigger the width, the more the machine can clear in one go. Typically, cutting width spans from 20cm to 35cm in standard models, with pro models reaching up to 42cm. In most cases, day-to-day use for grass alone will see you happily using the 25cm option. But for larger spaces or heavy duty work, a larger option may work better.

The line and spool is what spins at speed within a strimmer to cut the grass. This ranges from 1.3mm to 2.6mm in diameter, but if too thin, it can easily break or split. So, if you're hoping to cut through thicker growth of weeds and vegetation, then look for a machine with a thicker line. Plus, power is essential when cutting weeds. Cordless strimmers range from 12V to 66V, with the higher voltage favourable for big jobs.
