GETTING A SMALL LIVING ROOM TO WORK AND PLAY HARD NEEDS CAREFUL CONSIDERATION, SO WE ASKED THE EXPERTS FOR THEIR ADVICE

Compact living rooms

Living rooms are where we, well... 'live', but if yours is on the small size, how can you maximise its potential while still creating an inviting space that looks great? We asked three experts the chief creative officer of a furniture brand, an interior designer and a professional declutterer how to make the most of a compact living room.

FIND SPACE YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOU HAD

'People often assume that smaller furniture and accessories are best for a compact living room,' says Lisa, 'but that's not always the case. Instead, reducing unnecessary furniture and opting for a larger sofa or armchairs can create the illusion of a more expansive room.' Siân adds: 'Good storage solutions can really make a difference, as well as designer tricks, such as having furniture on feet so raised off the floor or looking for pieces with hidden storage, meaning less out on show. And try not to clutter up those walls,' she adds. Lisa-Marie says keeping them light and neutral can really help: 'Add an oversized mirror to reflect natural light, and always choose minimal window treatments.'

WORK WITH COSY

'Create a cosy vibe by adding layers and textures for a curated look that feels both inviting and warm,' says Lisa. 'It's about creating intimacy,' says Lisa-Marie. 'Try arranging little nooks within the room,' says Siân. 'Even a small space can have meaningful zones with purpose, such as a dedicated reading area with all your books, or a games zone. You may need a small working area, but this can be done with a desk that closes when not in use.'
