Inspired by nature, this textile designer has an eye for colour

CLARISSA HULSE

Travelling all over the globe while growing up, Clarissa Hulse knows a beautiful landscape when she sees one. Her mother was plant-obsessed and would tell her the names of flowers and point out surrounding nature.

“I spent time in Thailand, Spain, Italy and Greece as a child,” says Clarissa. “I soon became fascinated with the beauty of nature and this has remained a huge influence on me.”

As a child, Clarissa loved textiles and fabrics but didn’t realise she could work as a textile designer until her art teacher suggested she study textiles at Brighton University. This led her to design prints for fashion and hand-printed scarves, which she sold in department stores worldwide. She naturally progressed into designing homewares and has run her textile company for more than 25 years, working with brands such as Tuiss Blinds Online on collaborative collections for blinds and curtains.
