A Club Through Time: 75 Years of AGMS
Rock&Gem Magazine
|May 2025
The Austin Gem and Mineral Society or AGMS, began as an idea in Texas back in 1948. The State Mineral Society of Texas held a show in Austin and local enthusiasts were struck by the beautiful displays. Musings ensued about establishing a local club. On March 14, 1950 a group of 45 members gathered to launch the first official meeting.
The goals of the organization centered on educating the public about geology, rocks and minerals, as well as teaching lapidary techniques. The hope was that others would come to appreciate the fascinating and beautiful world that is literally beneath our feet.
To that end, AGMS had meetings with informative lectures, offered classes, conducted field trips and put on an annual show called Gem Capers. The show includes vendors, a fluorescent mineral display, a gem mine and Wheel-of-Fortune for kids, as well as a silent auction. The first one in 1951 had an astounding 1,400 attendees! A love of rocks has clearly been deep in the heart of Texas.
