The Upland Almanac
|Summer 2025
Sometimes in sporting literature, we overlook a chapter or passage due to a more memorable sentence or story.
Hidden Gems
These touted words seem to resonate deeper than others to the overall audience. The sheer brilliance of such passages becomes ingrained when reading or rereading a book. It may be a self-deprecating ramble by Gene Hill, an eloquent sentence full of imagery by Michael McIntosh or humorous dialogue from Corey Ford. Particular passages or chapters just seem to resonate deeper than others to many and become etched in the reader’s mind. Another example, at least for me, is Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac, in the essay “Sky Dance.”

THE MORNING OF THE FIRST DAY
On the morning of the day following that of his return, the Captain awakened at an early hour, but he lay quietly for some minutes while gazing out the open windows toward the South Orchard and the well-remembered hump of Rock Pasture beyond.
