LEGACY IN MOTION

Daniéla Dufour steps out of her father Philippe Dufour’s shadow, forging her own path while honouring the legacy of independent watchmaking.
When the video connecting the hallowed world of Danièla Dufour to my urban existence in Kuala Lumpur fizzled on, I noticed an unusual accessory around her neck. As the connection improved, what I initially thought was a pendant emerged as a loupe-the tool watchmakers use to examine the minutiae of movements. I'd seen her father, renowned watchmaker Philippe Dufour, wear one across his forehead in photographs before. I didn't ask if this was deliberate on Danièla's part, but it was a touching way to signify a connection with her famous father.
Indeed, in the world of haute horlogerie few names command as much respect as Philippe Dufour's. His Simplicity timepiece, introduced in 2000, was groundbreaking for its absolute purity and dedication to traditional watchmaking techniques, showcasing the art of hand-finishing in an age dominated by industrialisation. With its perfect execution of classic design and a movement crafted entirely by hand, Simplicity became an iconic representation of independent watchmaking's devotion to artistry and precision.
Often hailed as one of the most important personalities in horology, Philippe Dufour's meticulous approach set a gold standard that transcends generations. But now, it is his daughter Danièla Dufour who is emerging from his shadow, carrying the weight of her father's legacy with both pride and ambition.
Within minutes of our interview, it quickly becomes apparent that her passion for watchmaking runs as deep as the lineage she hails from. There is something magnetic about her presence, particularly when she breaks into a big, beautiful smile, one that seems to light up the room as she begins to speak. It's clear she's not just preserving her father's legacy; she wants to shape the future of watchmaking.
