Sunscreens are no longer designed just for UV protection. Many include skincare actives to support skin health inside-and-out

If there is one thing that skin doctors constantly remind us to do, it is to wear sunscreen daily. In fact, we are not only told that we should never leave home without sun protection, we should be wearing it when we're at home too.

Here’s good news: Today’s sunscreens are far more sophisticated than they were a decade ago. No more chalky, pore-clogging formulations. Instead, you'll find milky fluids and serum-like lotions that promise more than just protection against damaging UV rays. These new gen sunscreens merge high-SPF protection with skin-loving actives like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides, transforming the humble liquid into a multi-functional skincare-hybrid that also supports skin health.

“Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid help maintain hydration, ceramides support barrier repair, niacinamide regulates oil production and brightens uneven skin tone, while antioxidants defend against environmental oxidative stress. And in a climate like Singapore’s where heat, humidity, UV exposure and pollution constantly challenge the skin barrier, these additions can be highly beneficial, especially if some individuals prefer multi-functioning skincare than a multi-step routine,” says Dr Angeline Yong, dermatologist and medical director, Angeline Yong Dermatology.
