Ethiopia opens Africa's biggest power dam

AFTER 13 years of construction, a massive dam that cost $5 billion (R85bn) to build will bring electricity to millions of people across Ethiopia and its neighbour-ing countries.

Africa's largest hydroelectric dam was officially opened last month. Called Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), it's built on the Blue Nile, the largest tributary of the Nile River - it's named after the dark, blue-coloured sediment that flows into it from the Ethiopian highlands.
