The hunt for the Brink's-Mat bullion spreads across the world as the hit drama returns

- WORDS: CAREN CLARK. PHOTOS: BBC

GOLDEN GLOBE

The ripples from the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery, which saw thieves steal £26 million in gold bullion from a warehouse near Heathrow, are spreading even further in the second series of BBC1's The Gold.

In the first run of the drama, which is inspired by the crime, tenacious Deputy Chief Inspector Brian Boyce (Hugh Bonneville) and his colleagues DI Nicki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer) and DI Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott) secured convictions for some of those involved. But they eventually realised that the criminals they had apprehended had only ever possessed half of the gold.

Now, with pressure from their bosses to wrap up the investigation - the longest and most expensive in Metropolitan Police history – the trio are even more determined to trace the loot and the criminals who are still at large.

Top of their list is robber Charlie Miller (Sam Spruell), who they believe stashed away some of the gold before disappearing.
