FUTURE OF MEDIA: THE STREAMING REVOLUTION CHALLENGES BROADCASTING

The media landscape has witnessed a seismic shift over the last few decades, as traditional broadcasting has faced a new contender in the form of streaming. Both technologies offer distinct approaches to content distribution, each with its origins, evolution, and current challenges. This comparison seeks to explore the differences between broadcasting and streaming, analyze their respective market shares, and delve into the ongoing rivalry that could shape the future of media consumption.

THE ORIGINS OF BROADCASTING AND STREAMING

Broadcasting, in its modern form, dates back to the early 20th century with the advent of radio. Television broadcasting followed suit, reaching its peak in the mid-1900s. The technology is based on transmitting audio and video signals over the airwaves, accessible through radio or TV antennas, and later via cable networks. Broadcasting became the default mode of mass communication, revolutionizing entertainment, news, and advertising with linear, scheduled content.

Streaming, by contrast, emerged as a digital technology in the early 2000s, with the rise of the internet. It involves the transmission of data in real-time, allowing users to access content ondemand through connected devices. Platforms like YouTube (2005) and Netflix’s streaming service (2007) pioneered this space, offering an alternative to cable and satellite broadcasting. Unlike broadcast, which pushes content to all viewers simultaneously, streaming allows users to pull content at their convenience.
