AND LET THERE BE LIGHT!

|June 2023
Artificial light allows filmmakers to create different moods, atmospheres, and styles for their films. Artificial light also enables filmmakers to shoot in different locations and times of day, regardless of the natural light available, which can expand their creative possibilities and enhance their visual storytelling. A special focus on the cinematographers' BFF!
Cameras and lights are two of the most important tools used in movie-making and studio production. Without proper lighting, even the best cameras can leave the filmmaker with an unappealing image. Since the role of lighting is so crucial in making a movie look visually stunning and captivating, light fixtures for movies and studios are a critical investment.
There are three main types of lighting used in the movie and studio industry: key, fill, and backlight. The key light shines a bright light onto the subject, while the fill light is softer and is used to fill in any shadows and add additional highlights. The backlight is positioned behind the subject to create separation between the subject and the background.
When it comes to selecting the right lighting for the job, it’s best to consider one’s budget, the desired style, and the type of filming environment. Here are some of the most commonly used camera lights for movies and studios.
TUNGSTEN LIGHTING
Tungsten lighting is a type of artificial lighting that uses a tungsten filament inside a glass bulb to produce light. Tungsten lighting is also known as incandescent lighting or hot lighting because it generates a lot of heat when turned on.
Tungsten lighting has a colour temperature of around 3200K, which means it produces a warm, yellowish-white light. Tungsten lighting is often used in film and photography to create a natural or cosy atmosphere or to simulate sunlight or candlelight. Tungsten lighting can also be modified with gels, diffusers, or reflectors to change its colour or quality.
