Photography is a challenging profession for many reasons, but for this passionate visual storyteller, it's more than just a career - it's a calling
-
Lungisani Mjaji hails from the village of Nongidi in northern KwaZuluNatal. He was brought up - along with his four siblings - by his mom, Cushiwe Princess Mjaji, who is "a rock and guiding light in this world".
Currently studying at Tshwane University of Technology, 27-year-old Lungisani is diving head-first into the world of photography, exploring its depths and discovering new horizons. “Each time I press the shutter button, it's like pouring a piece of my soul into the frame," he says. "I'm driven by a burning passion to prove that photography is more than just a hobby - it's a viable career path, and a way to make a difference."
He was inspired by his former lecturers and now friends, Afika Mandela and Xola Xabendlini, who introduced him to this art form and encouraged him to study it. "They saw something in me that I hadn't yet seen in myself, and for that I am eternally grateful."
Dedicated and on a mission, his end goal is clear: to challenge stereotypes and pave the way for future generations of artists.
"I'm not just doing this for myself; I'm doing it for those who haven't had the same opportunities I've been blessed with. Education is a precious gift and I want to share it with as many people as I can, spreading hope and opportunity wherever I go."
NIKON SUPPORT
Lungisani uses camera gear supplied by Nikon, which has partnered with this emerging creative to support his photography journey.
