Given the state of Apple Intelligence on iPhone compared with the artificial intelligence (AI) Google is offering on Android phones, it seemed almost inevitable that John Giannandrea, Apple's senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, would one day be persuaded by Tim Cook that he didn't need to turn up to work again.

This month, Giannandrea stepped down from his position and Amar Subramanya joined Apple as vice president of AI, reporting directly to Craig Federighi.
