A Controversial Constitution
Champak
|January Second 2025
January 26 was approaching, and the residents of Champakvan were busy preparing to celebrate Republic Day. Everything was going sparklingly well, when a group of forest dwellers, led by Baddy jackal, began demanding a separate constitution for the forest.

“Baddy, why do we need a separate constitution? Our forest is a part of India and we follow the Indian Constitution. What’s the problem with that?” asked King Shersingh, when the issue came up in his royal court.
“How can city-dwellers and forest-dwellers have the same constitution?” Baddy challenged. The elders in the court nodded at each other; Baddy did have a point.
Sensing support, Baddy continued confidently, “Aren’t our needs different from those of the city-dwellers? Hence, I propose we write a new constitution for ourselves.”
“Well, the Indian constitution has not failed us thus far, so I see no reason to write a new one,” King Shersingh said thoughtfully.
“Why not?” said Baddy stubbornly, “No forest or country is truly a republic until it has its own constitution!”
“Baddy, the Indian Constitution is most suitable for our forest. For its creation, the constitutions of about 60 countries were studied, and the best provisions were included to make it perfect for India,” Cheeku rabbit tried to explain.
“Cheeku, we won’t be fooled by your words!” Baddy silenced him, “Forest dwellers, don't you want Champakvan to have its own constitution? It will also set a strong example for other forests!”
Meeku mouse piped up, “Listen Baddy, the Indian constitution is the largest in the world, with a preamble, 22 parts, 448 articles, and 12 schedules. Most importantly, it can be amended as needed, making it unique when compared to other constitutions.”
“Meeku, no matter what you say, the reality is that our forest doesn't have its own constitution,” Kitty cat said, swayed by Baddy's proposal.
