She will forever be associated with her title role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Sarah Michelle Gellar is enjoying being part of a new buzzworthy series as forensics chief Tanya Martin in prequel Dexter: Original Sin, now streaming on Paramount+. The 47-year-old actress stars alongside Patrick Gibson, who plays a young Dexter Morgan – the serial killer previously portrayed by Michael C. Hall. Christian Slater, as Dexter’s adoptive father, Harry, and Patrick Dempsey, as Captain Aaron Spencer, round out the dream cast. It’s a juicy role and one Gellar feels lucky to have, she reveals.

How much of a Dexter fan were you before this prequel came about?

I was a big Dexter fan. I watched all of the original and loved it. I remember being hooked by Dexter as a character from the very beginning. He’s such a complicated character because he’s a bad guy but also a good guy. Then, when the idea of this new series came to me, I couldn’t believe it. I was excited as a fan apart from anything else.

How would you describe Dexter: Original Sin for those who haven’t yet watched it?
