Mississippi truck accident unleashes 21 primates and widespread panic

Most of the monkeys, which were being transported from a research center affiliated with Tulane University, have been recovered following their Oct. 27 escape, officials say

THE shocking escape of 21 lab monkeys in Mississippi triggered chaos and fears of rabies along with scary buzz that the critters were involved in sinister top secret research.

The jailbreak came when a 2025 Chevy Silverado pickup carrying the rhesus macaque monkeys, which can weigh as much as 26 pounds each, overturned on Interstate 59 running through a rural patch north of Heidelberg on Oct. 27 scattering crates labeled “live monkeys” into tall grass.

Highway Patrol troopers say the 54-year-old driver and 34-year-old passenger, both from Maryland, were not injured.
