It's a change of pace for actress and mother of two Gemma Whelan as the Game of Thrones star tackles her first musical theatre role

Prolific actress Gemma Whelan is a busy woman. Just before HELLO!'s exclusive interview at her London home, she has been making treats with her three-year-old son Freddie, who sits alongside her in the family's homely kitchen.

Now making her musical theatre debut in Tim Firth's 2013 hit comedy, This is My Family – about a disastrous family holiday that eventually brings the clan back together – you might think that the mother of two would be exhausted by her hectic schedule.

But the actress, who shares Freddie and seven-year-old daughter Frances with her husband, psychotherapist Gerry Howell, gives us her hints for juggling motherhood and a challenging job.

And Gemma, 44, who appeared in Killing Eve, Gentleman Jack and The Crown, and as Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, also talks to us about drawing on her experience as a mother, as well as the enduring legacy of that massive fantasy TV blockbuster, and the friendships she made among its star-studded cast...

Congratulations on your musical theatre debut, Gemma. What drew you to this show?

"I read the script and thought: 'I have to do this; I love it so much.' So far, it's one of the most glorious theatrical experiences I've had."
