The romantic idea of farming is about as rustic and low-tech as it gets. Most people envision simple farmers working with simple tools and machines, the salt of the earth. As greater percentages of people live in cities, that notion gets reinforced.

The reality, however, is that technology has always played a major role in agricultural advancement, from Jethro Tull's invention of the seed drill in 1701 until today.
