Managing breeding stock and unsold weaner calves

Persistent outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have dealt a severe blow to the South African cattle industry.

One major consequence has been the restriction on cattle movement, leaving many weaner calves unsold and on the farms for longer than usual. As a result, stocking densities are expected to rise heading into winter. This heightened pressure places additional strain on breeding stock, which must maintain optimal body condition throughout the cold months to ensure successful reconception in summer.
