Newmont's Ahafo North Mine: Ghana's Golden Testament to Stability
Offshore Africa
|November 2025
Under a cloudy Afrisipakrom sky, gold shimmered with new promise as Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, flanked by Ghana's Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Newmont executives, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the $900 million Ahafo North mine — reaffirming Ghana's stature as a dependable mining destination amid shifting regional currents.

For Newmont Corporation, the world’s largest gold producer, the event marked more than an operational milestone. It represented a strong vote of confidence in Ghana’s regulatory stability and investment climate at a time when fiscal and political uncertainty are reshaping Africa’s resource landscape.
“Achieving commercial production at Ahafo North represents a significant milestone for Newmont and our partners in Ghana,” said Tom Palmer, Newmont's Chief Executive Officer. “This world-class operation demonstrates our commitment to operational excellence while creating enduring value for investors, communities, and host governments.”
The mine achieved its first gold pour on September 19, 2025, culminating years of meticulous planning, infrastructure development, and workforce training. Located near Afrisipakrom in the Ahafo region, Ahafo North is expected to produce about 50,000 ounces of gold this year and ramp up to full capacity through 2026. Over its 13-year lifespan, annual output will range between 275,000 and 325,000 ounces, making it one of West Africa’s most significant new gold operations.
