The South African pome fruit industry: a review of the 2024 season

South African apple exports increased by 12% in 2024 compared with the previous season, reaching 48,6 million 12,5kg cartons, while pear exports rose by 8% to 20,06 million cartons.

This growth was largely attributed to the maturation of young orchards, the introduction of more productive cultivars, and the industry’s recovery from the hail and flood damage experienced in 2023.

Additionally, improved weather conditions strengthened overall yields, enabling the industry to capitalise on expanding export opportunities.

The Far East and Asia emerged as key growth markets, with India recording a 54% year-on-year increase in apple imports, particularly favouring red bicoloured varieties such as Royal Gala and Bigbucks. Southeast Asia, including Thailand, recently reopened its market to South African apples, also presenting significant export potential.

Europe remained the dominant destination for pears, accounting for 34% of exports and reflecting a 25% increase from 2023. Concurrently, demand for South African blush pears continued to grow in the Far East and the Middle East, reinforcing their strategic importance.
