New-generation business jets are flying faster and further than ever before. ATUL CHANDRA outlines the developments
-
Advanced next-generation executive jets are driving innovation and efficiency to unprecedented levels in the business aviation sector.
Manufacturers such as Gulfstream, Embraer and Bombardier are delivering aircraft with cutting-edge innovations in aerodynamic refinement, which are powered with more efficient engines and, as a result, are achieving greater fuel efficiency, longer range, and smoother performance. More environmentally friendly than their predecessors, new-generation business jets also feature lower direct operating costs and reduced carbon footprints. Industry goals set by the U.S. National Business Aviation Association, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and the International Business Aviation Council called for a 2 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency annually between 2010 to 2020; carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onward; and net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
DELIVERING ON PERFORMANCE
Gulfstream delivered its first all-new Gulfstream G800 to a customer this August, marking the entry into service of the world's longest-range business aircraft. The G800 enters into service following the grant of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certifications this April. said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream. 'The G800 is entering service with extraordinary program maturity, just like the Gulfstream G700 before it.
The G800 can travel 15,186 kilometres at its long-range cruise speed of Mach 0.85 and 12,964 km at its high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90. The aircraft can also fly 14,816 km at Mach 0.87, and its maximum operating speed has been increased to Mach 0.935 from Mach 0.925.
The G-800's high-speed range capability delivers real advantages to customers, allowing them to save up to 1.5 hours on flights longer than 12,038 km when travelling at speeds of Mach 0.90, as compared to Mach 0.80.
