Enhancing fire safety in high-rises
Construction Week
|February 2025
Mumbai's high-rise developments dominate the national landscape, with the city accounting for 77% of India's tall buildings.
-
Globally, Mumbai ranks 17th in the number of high-rise buildings, underscoring its importance as a key player in vertical urban development. This trend reflects a broader urbanization movement, with developers and policymakers working together to create modern, sustainable housing solutions.
With high-rise buildings becoming the norm, safety in these vertical marvels has become a pressing concern. Among the most critical challenges is ensuring electrical fire safety.
Mumbai Fire Brigade data reveals that electrical faults are responsible for over 70% of the city's fire incidents annually, making it the leading cause of urban fires. The dense population in high-rise buildings magnifies the risk, where a single electrical fire can jeopardize hundreds of lives and cause irreparable damage. In the first seven months of 2024, a total of 3,197 fire incidents were reported, leading to eight fatalities and 112 injuries, with electrical faults accounting for 70% of these cases.
