March 2024

Silicon Labs is a trailblazer in wireless connectivity for the Internet of Things. For nearly two decades, Silicon Labs has been building an unprecedented platform to support the broadest set of wireless technologies, standards, and ecosystems in the world. During an interaction with Vidushi, Dhiraj Sogani, Sr. Director, Wireless Product Marketing, Silicon Labs discussed the smart metering outlook within the broader framework of smart cities and how it ensure data privacy and system integrity.

Silicon Labs Empowering India's Smart Metering Revolution

Can you elaborate on the impact of smart metering within the broader framework of smart cities and its role in energy conservation?

Smart metering plays a crucial role within the broader framework of smart cities, contributing significantly to energy conservation and efficient resource management. Smart meters measure and monitor the consumption of energy resources like electricity, gas, water, and heating to communicate the data wirelessly to utilities and help cities employ the resources more efficiently.

For instance, electricity metering contributes efficiently to a nation's energy utilisation. Even though India's power loss has reduced considerably in the recent year, nearly 20% of electricity generation is lost during its transmission. This gap is filled by Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and smart grids for smart cities, that connect the consumers and the power generation grid through a bidirectional exchange of information.

With wirelessly connected smart meters, utilities and service providers can collect electricity data automatically and remotely, providing them with accurate consumption information, without manual work. Integration of renewable energy sources through smart metering further helps balance the energy grid and ensures a reliable and sustainable energy supply. To our benefit, it would usher environmental sustainability over the coming years.

Another advantage out of many with smart energy meters is that it can detect faults or irregularities in the energy grid, helping utilities identify and address issues promptly. This proactive approach to supervision and detection would prevent energy wastage and minimise downtime.

In the long run, cities will operate more efficiently, minimise the loss of energy resources and restrain greenhouse gas emissions. It would empower consumers as well as the municipalities by allowing cost savings and promising a better and secure future.
