THE UNION government announced a sevenday state mourning for Manmohan Singh, who his media advisor Sanjaya Baru, has described as a An Accidental Prime Minister in a book in April 2014.

A few months later, a resounding poll victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party ousted the Congress-led coalition from government. Singh's stint as prime minister, that had begun in 2004, ended in 2014.

Through that decade, in the decisions that the government took and in his sparring with fellow Parliamentarians, the academic in him shone forth. Manmohan Singh had studied economics at the University of Cambridge and attained his doctorate from the University of Oxford. Singh will be remembered for many things, but not least of all for marrying the tenets of capitalism with welfare economics.
