It's Not What You Said. It's 'How' You Said It.

MANY YEARS AGO, during my first week at a new job, I walked into a conference room where two senior leaders were discussing quarterly targets.
One of them, let’s call him Mr X, was leaning back in his chair, arms folded, speaking in a perfectly polite tone except it wasn't polite. His voice carried a decibel that could grill paneer. The words were measured, but the volume was a power play. The other person, clearly younger in rank, kept nodding with increasing intensity, like his ears were trying to dodge the blast radius.
That day, I learnt something about corporate India. Tone isn’t just an accessory to communication. It is the communication.
We know this, intuitively. We say things like “he barked at me”, “she snapped”, “his voice was calm, but something felt off”. Yet we rarely reflect on the subtle violence - and hierarchy - that tone can carry, even when words pretend to be neutral. Decibel is status in most Indian rooms. The louder person, more often than not, wins.
When Tone Precedes Logic
