INDIA'S AI INFLECTION POINT

THE YEAR has opened with unusual clarity of intent. India enters it as the fastest-growing major economy, with real GDP for FY26 projected at 7.4 per cent and nominal growth at 8 per cent.

With the backdrop of this catalytic macroeconomic outlook, the recently concluded India AI Impact Summit has been nothing short of an inflection point in India's growth narrative.

As the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South, it did more than just convene policymakers, founders, and investors. It crystallised a shared national conviction that AI will be a force multiplier in India's development trajectory.

For a country of India's demographic and geographic complexity, AI's role in strengthening governance frameworks, enhancing state capacity, and improving service delivery at population scale is ubiquitous.

An enabling architecture

India’s AI market, valued at $13 billion in 2025 and projected to reach $130 billion by 2032, signals the emergence of a once-in-a-generation platform shift. Crucially, India’s AI ambition is being constructed with deliberate sequencing.

The Union Cabinet’s approval of a Rs 10,000 crore state-backed venture capital framework clearly signals that the state is de-risking frontier innovation where gestation cycles are long and technical uncertainty remains high.

Political capital is reinforcing financial capital. PM Narendra Modi’s recent roundtable with 16 deep-tech founders across healthcare, agriculture, cybersecurity, space technology and social impact reflects sustained executive attention to the innovation economy.
