Imagining the World as a Community of Trust
BW Businessworld
|September 20, 2025
WHAT HOLDS A society together? For centuries, the answer has oscillated between force and law, markets and power, contracts and coercion.
But beneath all these visible structures lies an invisible glue: trust.
When we board a plane, we trust an engineer we have never met, a pilot whose life intersects with ours for only a few hours, and an air-traffic system that is mostly unseen. When we tap a button on our phones to send money across continents, we trust not just the bank but also the complex, anonymous web of digital systems that makes the transfer possible. Every act of modern life rests, silently and almost invisibly, on trust.
And yet, trust is also what seems in shortest supply today. Democracies groan under suspicion. Global trade frays under nationalist anxieties. Science faces skepticism in the face of conspiracy. Social media amplifies outrage rather than confidence. Every institution built to foster trust—governments, markets, universities, media—seems to be battling a crisis of legitimacy.
This erosion is not an abstract worry. A society without trust pays a heavy price. It shows up as higher costs of doing business, endless verification, fractured politics, and the shrinking of collective ambition. Without trust, every decision becomes slower, riskier, and more adversarial.
The Everyday Web of Trust
But what if we flipped the imagination? What if we began to think of the world not as a battlefield of nations, or a marketplace of competing interests, but as a community of trust?
