Liberty Caravans' range of four models runs from a bed-on-wheels to a double-axle hotel room... and everything in between.

- Words Leon Botha

Built for freedom

The Eastern Cape caravan manufacturer Liberty isn’t equally well known everywhere, since most of its models have so far been sold in and around Gqeberha.

Now the owner, Dawid Barnard, is ready to spread his wings.

For years, Dawid travelled far and wide across the continent, always camping in a tent. Those experiences now take shape in his Liberty caravans, which offer plenty of luxuries, yet are also geared for the bush.

The building materials are crucial in any caravan, and from the outset, it's clear that a Liberty is built to last.

An aluminium frame sits atop a galvanised chassis, finished with a fibreglass skin and insulated with a honeycomb composite. The floor uses the same type of material, resulting in a caravan that is, structurally, almost maintenance-free.

imageThere are four models: the smallest is the LC2 Go, the middle two are the LC2 and LC4, and the flagship is called the Cruiser. Their standard equipment is much the same: a two-burner gas stove, a battery (from standard deep-cycle to lithium), water tanks (100-190 l), a 3 kg gas cylinder and an awning.

They don't know what we know

Despite technological advances, and the unrealistic notion held by some that camping is merely a way to show off, the heart of the lifestyle should remain unchanged, says Neels van Heerden.
