With a 63.73 lakh kilometres of road network, the second largest in the world must have efficient freight movement to show for it. Tractor trailers are driving this efficiency. To give a sense of scale, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and its multiple agencies have attained 144,634 km of National Highways length. State highways at 186,908 km and other roads at 59,02,539 km account for the rest as per a November 2022 statistic. It is a step towards efficient freight movement and improved market access. The government claims that the 47.85 per cent growth with 2014-15 as a base at 97,830 km validates this assumption. Initiatives like the Bharatmala Pariyojana here play a key role.
