Green Technology And Synergies
Auto Components India
|September 2022
In an upfront interaction, Kamal Bali, President & Managing Director, Volvo Group and Girish DM, Head of India Purchasing & Group Truck Purchasing, Volvo Group speak to Ashish Bhatia with Raghul Krishnan on green technology and synergies.
Q. What did it take to make the first Green engine casting? Does it refer to wet sand moulds and how is it an improvement of the erstwhile castings?
A. Girish DM: Green casting is not about the manufacturing of the whole casting. It is not only about the ingredients used to make the casting; the energy consumption for the casting but also how it ends up being transported. The term ‘green’ here refers to the entire value chain, in an end-to-end implementation. Volvo, globally, uses the most recyclable packaging material where the process works out in a manner such that the products are packaged and sent back to the suppliers. It makes it a completely circular process of deployment.
Kamal Bali: Recycling is a key aspect when it comes to building a sustainable future. The thinking goes beyond costing implications to building the desired future of sustainable mobility. It will be cost neutral in my opinion but the lens while starting such a project is never cost-centric alone. With economies of scale, cost considerations will be allayed.
Q. Any learnings from the prototyping stage?
