he BMW iX1 is an electric SUV that utilises the body and interior layout of the petrol-powered X1 compact five-seater.

BMW X1/IX1 FROM $61,800

The X1 starts at $61,800 for the sDrive 18i and rises to $92,300 for the sporty M35i model. The EV iX1 is priced from $80,600 for the base front-wheel drive eDrive20 xLine.

Splash out another $6200 and you get the xDrive30 xLine that adds another electric motor for all-wheel drive. An M Sport version is the same price.

Fake leather, electric seats, dual-zone air, smart key entry, powered tailgate and a wireless phone charger are standard.

An option pack includes a panoramic sunroof, massaging front seats and 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio.

The X1’s cabin is beautifully presented to live up to the premium pricing. Metal highlights nicely contrast the dark hues while ambient lighting adds to the quality display.

The iX1 gets a curved instrument cluster that flows into the central touchscreen.

Gone is BMW's iDrive control system, with the iX1 instead requiring touch commands for the infotainment screen.
