AUDI Q4 E-TRON FROM $84,900

Audi's Q4 e-tron is an all-electric compact SUV aiming to capitalise on strong EV demand at the more affordable end of the market.

OK, with prices starting at $84,900 it's not exactly a bargain, but it lands it in the space dominated by the BMW iX1 and iX2, each attracting their fair share of buyers.

For that you get a more traditional SUV body but there's also a sleeker Sportback ($86,500), the latter missing out on roof rails but getting an S-Line styling pack with 20-inch alloys.

Each is powered by a 210kW/545Nm motor driving the rear wheels for up to 540km of EV range (524km for the SUV body).

Standard fare includes 19-inch alloy wheels, partial leather trim, powered tailgate, heated front seats, powered driver's seat, tri-zone ventilation, adaptive cruise, front and rear parking sensors, ambient lighting, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.6-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

There's also auto braking, rear cross traffic assist, exit warning, blind spot warning and lane departure warning.
