Decoding the spiritual connection between architecture and wellbeing with Manish Banker of TAOStudiO at the nature-inspired Swastik in Pune.
-
Born in Gujarat, and having worked at Osho Commune International in Pune for two years, Manish Banker is an architect with a spiritual approach to spatial design. He constantly thrives to connect people with themselves and their environment. After establishing Tao Architecture in 1994, he has used his creative energy to create spaces that connect with nature through bold, imaginative and authentic designs. “I think I am really fortunate to land clients who are open to fresh ideas,” he shares when quizzed how he manages to find clients who are willing to invest in his madness!
One such project designed by Manish and his team at TAOStudiO is Swastik, a holistic wellness centre that takes one back to one’s roots. Away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, this stunning property is located at the Peacock Valley in the cosy lap of Mother Nature. Standing tall amidst the Sahyadri range of mountains, the built structure overlooks the backwaters of Khadakwasla lake and the majestic Sinhagad fort. With design inspiration borrowed from art, history and nature, it includes rooms that resemble hobbit homes and are designed with the thought of offering a feeling similar to being inside a mother's womb. Further, the architecture celebrates daily rituals of the rising sun and the rising moon with the ever-evolving light transitions between day and night. SUMISHA GILOTRA, Editor, Architect and Interiors India, chats with Architect Manish Banker, Principal, TAOStudiO about the architecture of Swastik and its impact on wellbeing.
How does the design of Swastik celebrate elements of nature?Cette histoire est tirée de l'édition March 2025 de Architect and Interiors India.

MUSING MUSEUMS
A few months back, when I was in Budapest, I walked into a building that left me awestruck. The inquisitive me went on to explore, and I discovered that it was a museum with pixels on the exterior and that the curved structure of the building dipped underground to form the interiors, even as the garden I was walking on was the green roof of the building that interjected at street level! Woah! I quickly took some pictures and went on to research this building, and the more I read about it, the more I fell in love with it. And then of course I had to share it with you all!
