It's the time of year to start finding the right gift for your smallholding friends. We've had festive fun finding some ideas for you. Maybe at least one of these should be a present to yourself!

Picking the perfect present for countryside people

What do smallholders and gardeners want for Christmas? For some a load of hay would be a great gift or a new green house. But practically this is not always possible so the trick is to find something they didn’t know they wanted or else look for something intensely practical to enrich their interests. One place to look for the poultry enthusiast is Collins Nets. They have a separate gift section which include some gorgeous welly socks and lovely, comfortable dog beds with striking designs. But I think anything from the poultry section would be very welcome. Whether you want a totally practical present like a nest box, a couple of brand new feeders and drinkers or a some egg trays or for that special person in your life, a complete set of incubation equipment, there is something for the chicken keeper in your life. And plenty of tasty treats for the hens in your life too! The horse owner would welcome a boot bag and on offer are super snug suits to battle all weather. Collins nets are happy to give advice and help as well and welcome your questions. www. collinsnets.co.uk - 01308 485422

imageTalking of boots, take a look at the Dry Boot company’s website. They say that the boot acts like a welly hence its name! The Harris Dryboot remains a100% guaranteed waterproof multipurpose lace-up boot available, favoured by farmers, smallholders, gamekeepers, gardeners, walkers, outdoor sports enthusiasts and just about anyone who needs a comfortable, hardwearing waterproof boot without the inconvenience of a knee length wellington.

Dealing with bullying behaviours in chickens

We love the idyllic idea of flocks of free ranging chickens, who live peacefully amongst each other and with us. What happens when this is not possible due to legal housing restrictions for poultry or practical reasons due to predators? Your chickens might start to bully each other. Fiona and Hugh Osborne look at the options to deal with bullying.
