One of the motives behind the Lodha report recommendations for reform was with the issue to ensure greater transparency. However, while play-er management remains a key part of administration, the lack of clarity and even worse, confusion and secrecy over Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s status as cricketer is an anomaly that suggests rather erroneously that some players are larger than the game.

Even Sachin Tendulkar was subjected to intense scrutiny and to several send offs before his eventual retirement. The adage was always that despite Tendulkar’s stature as a modern batting genius and maestro, no player was above the game.

Yet in what has become a sideshow to the Indian cricket team fortunes – and rather unfair on Virat Kohli and his team - is this attention on the issue of Dhoni’s availability, or rather lack of availability, every time India face up to another series.
