Can Robin Uthappa Represent India In Another WC?

Robin Uthappa is harboring hopes of a Team India return and he said in a recent interview with ESPNCricinfo that he has another World Cup left in him. But his aim looks to be at odds considering the team dynamics. The Indian team looks settled in the middle while the openers are fixed in the form of Rohit and Dhawan. Uthappa also claimed that Team India is looking for a finisher and he is preparing and will be ready if given a chance to fill that slot. But even at that position, his chances look diminishing. There are three core reasons why Uthappa cannot get into the team at the present and why his chances of playing the World Cup are nothing but a delusion.

UTHAPPA’S CURRENT FORM

Robin made his debut against England, but could only play 46 ODIs for the men in blue in the nine years from 2006 to 2015. He last played in an ODI in 2015 against Zimbabwe. His inconsistency has been the main reason behind him not getting a place in the team, as in those 46 matches, he was unable to score a single century and his average remained 25.94, which is way below the standards of a modern-day opener.

Comparing his ODI statistics might not be suitable as he himself said that he is looking to get into the T20 team. In T20Is, he hasn’t done much better either and has remained lethargic. In the 13 matches that he played for India, Uthappa wasn’t able to get much recognition as he failed to score even a half-century and his average again remained below 25.
